What you NEED to KNOW about Disney World’s MagicBand Plus: Disney World 101

If you’re headed to Disney World, you may have come across MagicBand Plus in your Disney research. If you’re wondering what they are, how they work, and if you actually need them for your trip, you’re in the right place!

And if you’re wonder if your old MagicBand (not the Plus model) will still work, stick around to the end.

This post is going to cover everything you need to know about Disney World’s MagicBand Plus.

MagicBand Plus

What is a MagicBand Plus?

A MagicBand Plus is an RFID wristband that’s linked to you and your My Disney Experience Account.

The MagicBand Plus replaces the previous two simplified models of MagicBands. The battery on the old MagicBands tends to die after five or so years, which is part of why Disney opted to upgrade to this rechargeable option.

What MagicBands do

MagicBands can hold EVERYTHING important that you might need on your trip. They can be your park ticket, your Disney Resort room key, your dining reservation, your Lightning Lane reservation and probably more! If your using PhotoPass, your MagicBand can also be used to link your photos.

You can also use MagicBands to make merchandise and food purchases around the park if you’re staying at a Disney World Resort hotel. This charges your purchases to your room, so you don’t have to carry a credit card around with you at the parks.

If you’re using your band for purchases, you create a pin number that has to be used with every purchase. So, if your band gets lost or stolen, no one else can make a purchase on your account without knowing the pin.

MagicBands also used to add a little extra magic in your trip with some interactive experiences. This includes lighting up and vibrating during at certain points during rides, shows, statues, and games throughout the parks.

How MagicBands work

You do need to charge your MagicBand daily to get full use out of it. It will still do the important stuff without being fully charged, such as unlocking your room and accessing your park ticket.

However, if you want to use the interactive features, you Band is going to need to be charged.

When you purchase your Band, you will need to link it to your account through My Disney Experience. To do this, open the app, and tap the three lines in the bottom right corner.

Then, scroll down to “Account” and select “MagicBands & Cards.” Then select the option to link your MagicBand.

MagicBands cannot be returned or transferred to another person. This is because once it’s linked to you account, it’s linked to your park tickets, hotel reservation, etc.

So, for your privacy and security, once you buy a band, you keep it. And once you link a Band to an account, it belongs to that person.

Who can use them

Magic Bands Plus are available for anyone 3 and up, who might be visiting Disney World, Disney Land, or a Disney Cruise Line.

Where to get them

You can get your MagicBands in the Disney Parks, or by ordering them ahead of time through My Disney Experience. Prices start at $35 for a plain band and increase the more decorative and character driven you get.

However, you can also get them through the Disney Store and use any discounts you’re able to apply.

Can I use my old MagicBand?

Like I mentioned earlier, the battery of the old MagicBand is reported to die after five years or so. However, according to my research, the battery was only needed for ride photos and some minor interactive experiences.

The RFID reader that’s used at touch points, like entering your room, accessing your park ticket, charging to your room, taping in for Lightning Lanes, etc, should still work!

So if you don’t care about the ride photos and whatnot, you should still be able to use your old MagicBand! I haven’t personally tested this yet, so I can’t personally confirm this.

But in doing research for this post I found people who have been using their pre-Pandemic MagicBands, some of which were over a decade old, as recently as 2025 and having no issues.

I plan to test my old MagicBands the next time I go. But for now I would say that, while I can’t promise anything, it seems highly likely that your old MagicBand will work and do what you need it to do.

If it doesn’t, and you want a MagicBand Plus of your own, you can always pick on up in the park. But the reports I’m reading seem definitive enough for me to take the chance.

Do you actually need one?

No, you don’t NEED a MagicBand do anything essential in Disney World. You can get a key card which will be your park ticket and room key. You can also use the My Disney Experience App, or your phone’s wallet.

All of these options are free. If you’re not impressed with MagicBands or looking to save some money, you can absolutely skip this purchase.

Personally, I like having the MagicBand on my wrist. It makes it easy to get in and out of the parks and use Lightning Lanes. However, if I ever need to buy one, I’ll be getting the cheapest band at a discount.

What do you think about Disney World’s MagicBand Plus? Will you be getting them for your next trip?
